Thermometer Calibration and Chamber Mapping: Define the Question First

Distinguish a thermometer calibration enquiry from a chamber temperature study and identify the sensor, working volume, loading and reporting questions.

TEQ technical knowledge

Checking a thermometer and investigating temperature throughout an enclosure answer different questions. A thermometer request concerns the specified sensor and readout. A chamber study may examine conditions at several locations and over time within an agreed working volume and loading condition. A reading at one point does not, by itself, describe every position in the enclosure.

Before requesting a quotation, identify

  • Equipment type, manufacturer, model, serial number and whether the request concerns a sensor, indicator, complete system or enclosure.
  • Working temperatures, required points, process tolerances and the intended use of the results.
  • Probe type, dimensions, cable/readout arrangement, and whether it can be removed from the installation.
  • For an enclosure enquiry: internal dimensions, intended working volume, loading condition, operating settings and access for measurement equipment.
  • The required question: indication error, changes over time, differences between locations, or another explicitly agreed characteristic.

Ask what the proposed work would cover and which conditions would be recorded. Request a clear distinction between the instrument being calibrated and any wider performance study.

Frequently asked questions

Does a calibrated thermometer prove an entire oven is uniform?+

No. The thermometer result alone does not establish the spatial temperature distribution in that oven.

Is chamber mapping the same as sterilisation validation?+

Do not treat the terms as interchangeable. The objective and applicable requirements must be reviewed separately.
