Pipettes, burettes, volumetric flasks and measuring cylinders are not interchangeable descriptions of one service. A useful volume-calibration enquiry identifies the instrument and whether its marking concerns liquid delivered or liquid contained. Piston-operated pipettes also need information about their configuration and the accessories used with them.
Prepare the following details
- Instrument type, manufacturer, model, serial or asset number, quantity and photographs of relevant markings.
- Nominal capacity, fixed or adjustable volume, requested settings or graduations, and the units used.
- For pipettes: number of channels, intended tips or other accessories, and any known leakage or repair history.
- For glassware: any class, reference-temperature and delivery/containment markings, plus the previous certificate if available.
- Intended application, acceptance criteria, cleaning status, previous liquid exposure and requested timing.
Ask which instrument/accessory combination and volume points would be assessed. Confirm the handling requirements before sending equipment, particularly when it has contained hazardous or contaminating substances. This checklist is for planning an enquiry; it is not a gravimetric procedure or a declaration of conformity to a particular standard.

Frequently asked questions
Can one method name cover every pipette and glassware item?+
Do not assume it does. The instrument design, markings and requested use should be reviewed before the work is agreed.
Does calibration automatically include leak repair or adjustment?+
These are separate request details. State the observed problem and ask what work is proposed, with results before adjustment where needed.
