Multimeters and Oscilloscopes: Specify the Functions That Matter

Define an electrical calibration request with required functions, ranges, frequencies, oscilloscope channels, probes, specifications and reporting needs.

An electrical instrument's model name is a starting point, not a complete calibration specification. A multimeter can support several measurement functions, while an oscilloscope introduces questions about channels, probes, signal amplitude and timing. Describe the measurements that affect your work so the laboratory can assess a clearly defined request.

Include these details

  • Manufacturer, model, serial number, quantity, installed options, firmware information where relevant, and the previous certificate.
  • For multimeters: the required voltage, current, resistance or other functions, operating ranges and important test points.
  • For alternating signals: relevant frequencies and amplitudes, rather than a request that simply says “AC calibration”.
  • For oscilloscopes: required channels, vertical and time-base settings, relevant frequency response, and the exact probes/accessories included.
  • Applicable manufacturer specification or customer tolerance, intended use, reported fault, repair history, required reporting and preferred timing.

Agree which functions, points and accessories would be covered. Do not infer that checking one function establishes every other function or setting. Ask how results and uncertainties will be reported, and confirm accredited scope for the requested work.

Frequently asked questions

Should probes and leads be listed separately?+

Yes. Identify the accessories used in the measurement and ask whether they are included in the agreed assessment.

Does an internal self-check replace an external calibration request?+

Do not assume equivalence. Describe the check performed and ask which documented measurement results are still required for your intended use.
